SUMMARY:Hidden Histories: The South Vietnamese Side of the Vietnam War
DESCRIPTION:Hidden Histories: The South Vietnamese Side of the Vietnam War\nClark County Historical Museum and Humanities Washington\, as part of the 2023 CCHM Speaker Series\, are excited to have Julie Pham bring her impactful presentation “Hidden Histories: The South Vietnamese Side of the Vietnam War” to Southwest Washington. The event will occur on Thursday\, April 6\, 2023 in person at the Clark County Historical Museum (1511 Main Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98660). Doors open at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m. \nThe Vietnam War is seen by much of the Western world as being fought between the Americans and North Vietnamese Communists\, with the South Vietnamese largely absent. Yet many Vietnamese refugees who came to America after the war served in the South Vietnamese military\, and there is little recognition and understanding of their contributions and role in the war. In fact\, in American and Vietnamese Communist histories\, the South Vietnamese are painted as corrupt\, apathetic sidekicks to the Americans. How did the South Vietnamese military really experience the Vietnam War? Historian Julie Pham draws from interviews she conducted with 40 South Vietnamese military veterans in the United States\, and illuminates how people can remember historical events differently. \nJulie Pham (she/her) is the CEO of CuriosityBased\, a consulting practice focused on fostering curiosity in the workplace. Her family owns Northwest Vietnamese News. She published Their War: The Perspectives of the South Vietnamese Military in the Words of Veteran-Emigres in 2019. She earned her PhD in history from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. \nPham lives in Seattle. \nThe CCHM Speaker Series is sponsored by the Humanities Washington\, Clark County Historic Preservation Commission\, and the League of Women Voters of Clark County. Thanks to support from Humanities Washington this event is free to the public. \nAttendees are encouraged to arrive early\, as seating is limited. \nFor more information\, contact the museum at 360-993-5679 or outreach@cchmuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Military History Talk
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary Walker: Hero\, Surgeon\, Trailblazer \nThursday\, March 23rd\, 2023 \n6:30 pm \nGeneral O.O. Howard House \n750 Anderson St.\, Vancouver \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Trust is excited to host the Vancouver Barracks Military Association’s 2023 military history talk series. Join us for this fascinating discussion with speaker Michelle Marra\, a descendant of Dr. Walker. \nSince it was created in the Civil War\, the Congressional Medal of Honor has only been awarded to one woman\, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. Dr. Walker was a woman ahead of her times\, fighting for her nation as the first female surgeon in the Union Army. Her wartime service merited the United States’ highest award for bravery. Years later\, the Medal was rescinded by Congress\, but restored again\, in the late 20th century. \nDr. Walker went on to fight for women’s rights as a suffragette. As a leader in the rational dress movement of the late 1880s\, she became famous for wearing a top hat and suits with her Congressional Medal of Honor pinned to a lapel. Dr. Walker is an example of integrity\, character and leadership that still inspires people today. This program is presented by a descendant\, who will share both the personal and professional side of this amazing American. \nTo attend\, please email jddavis@rocketmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Mary Edwards Walker

SUMMARY:U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters 2023 National Tour- Clackamas Oregon
DESCRIPTION:U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters\n\n\n\nThe Navy Band Sea Chanters are the United States Navy’s official chorus. The ensemble performs a variety of music including traditional choral music\, sea chanteys\, patriotic fare\, opera\, Broadway and contemporary music. The Sea Chanters regularly perform for the public in the Washington\, D.C.\, area and throughout the United States while on national tours. At home in Washington\, they perform for the president\, vice president and numerous congressional\, military and foreign dignitaries. In 1956\, Lt. Harold Fultz\, then the band’s assistant leader\, organized a vocal group from the Navy School of Music to sing chanteys and patriotic songs for the State of the Nation dinner. Recognizing the ensemble’s immediate success\, Adm. Arleigh Burke\, then Chief of Naval Operations\, transferred the group to the Navy Band\, named them the Sea Chanters and tasked this all-male chorus with perpetuating the songs of the sea. In 1980\, the group added women to its ranks and expanded its repertoire to include everything from Brahms to Broadway. \nThe Sea Chanters are frequently found at the center of our most important national events\, including inauguration day performances and state funerals. They have played a vital role in comforting the nation in times of mourning\, including appearances at memorials for the astronauts of the space shuttle Columbia and the presidential wreath laying ceremony at the United Airlines flight 93 crash site in Shanksville\, Pennsylvania. \nYou can read more at https://www.navyband.navy.mil/ensembles/sea-chanters \nFree tickets available at https://usnavyband.ticketleap.com/us-navy-band-sea-chanters-clackamas/

SUMMARY:Walk & Knock is Back
DESCRIPTION:After three years\, Walk & Knock will be back in the neighborhoods\, picking up non-perishable food and toiletries. Walk and Knock\, one of the nation’s largest one-day food drives is a Non-Profit 100% volunteer organization that collects charitable donations of food\, supplies\, and money\, for the Clark County Food Bank for providing food to those in need across our community. This drive takes place every year on the Saturday of December\, which this year is Saturday\, December 3\, 2022. \nYou can help in the fight against hunger by filling your Walk and Knock grocery bag with non-perishables and leaving it on your front porch on Saturday morning before 9:00 AM. If you don’t have a Walk and Knock grocery bag\, please feel free to use any grocery bag\, just be sure to label it “Walk and Knock”. A half a bag\, a full bag\, or even two bags if you can… every bit helps! \n\nVolunteers will gather together Saturday morning and begin their routes. They go door–to–door to collect the bags and deliver the food to one of several drop–off locations or staging areas located throughout Clark County. The food is then boxed by volunteers and delivered to the Clark County Food Bank. From there it is distributed to local food banks which distribute the collected food to people in need. \nThe Walk and Knock Food Drive encompasses the entire Clark County area. Volunteers come from local church groups\, high school clubs\, and several other organizations\, as well as hundreds of individuals who answer the call for help. Members of local non-profit organizations and other community leaders head up the various staging sites. \nFor more information\, please visit Walk and Knock online.

SUMMARY:Christmas Ships
DESCRIPTION:It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! What a wonderful time to relax and take in all the beauty our community has to offer\, especially after dark. Not only do our neighborhoods light up\, but so does the Columbia River. One of the most unique Christmas lighting displays around Clark County starts Friday\, December 2\, 2022. \nThe Christmas Ship Parade started out as one lone sailboat\, and now the fleet averages 60 ships (between the Columbia River and Willamette River fleets) adorned with Christmas lights and decorations. The Christmas Ship Parade has become a family tradition for many boat owners\, and the Skippers pay for their own decorations and fuel costs\, for the enjoyment of all. As this is an all-volunteer organization\, not all ships make it out every night. \nThe Columbia Fleet will set sail on Friday\, December 2\, 2022\, and will sail for a total of 15 nights through December 21\, 2022. For more information and the most up-to-date schedule\, visit Christmas Ships online.
