DESCRIPTION:The Community Military Appreciation Committee (CMAC) will present Vancouver’s Memorial Day Observance Monday\, May 29\, 2023\, at 11 am. This annual ceremony at the Bandstand on the Vancouver Barracks Parade Ground honors men and women who have lost their lives in service of our country. The Vancouver Barracks is now preserved by the National Park Service at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. \nFort Vancouver National Historic Site Superintendent Tracy Fortmann said\, “Vancouver Barracks is an incredibly special place and a crucial part of this national park. The Barracks are much more than a visible reminder of our shared 19th and 20th century military history\, the Barracks serve us as a direct touchstone to our nation’s military past and the soldiers who have served and sacrificed for our country. Superintendent Fortmann added\, “It is a tremendous honor to care for Fort Vancouver National Historic Site\, and our responsibility goes far beyond caring for the buildings and landscapes through our stewardship\, the history and stories of those who were here remain alive in perpetuity.” \nRetired Army Colonel Larry J. Smith will be the Master of Ceremonies. Speakers at the event will include Superintendent Fortmann\, Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle\, with a keynote by Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. There will be special remarks by Meredith McMackin\, a Gold Star mother. Boy Scouts of America Troops 479 and 5479 are raising and lowering the garrison flag\, an important symbol of our community’s military history. There will be a dove release and color guards\, as well as military medleys played by the 204th Army Band. \nLarry Smith stated\, “The Memorial Day Observance honors those who have given their lives for our country\, and the event also provides us with an opportunity to show our respect and support for the men and women of our armed forces.” \nParking is available starting at 09:00 am at Hudson’s Bay High School\, where attendees may ride a C-Tran shuttle to and from the event site. \nCMAC is an all-inclusive group composed of members representing youth\, education\, civic\, military\, veteran groups\, and local governments. CMAC executes and plans community-wide events\, such as Memorial Day\, Veterans Day\, Our Community Salutes\, and POW/MIA Day ceremonies\, as well as recognition and support of military families of all services. SUMMARY:Clark County Historical Museum 2023 Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Music Preservation Project: Preserving Historic Music for Future Generations\nClark County Historical Museum and the Historic Music Preservation Project (HMPP)\, are excited to have Sammuel Murry-Hawkins\, HMPP Executive Director\, present “The Historic Music Preservation Project: Preserving Historic Music for Future Generations” for this month’s CCHM Speaker Series. The event will occur on Thursday\, May 4\, 2023 in person at the Clark County Historical Museum (1511 Main Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98660). Doors open at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m. \nThe Historic Music Preservation Project is dedicated to the preservation and cataloging of historic popular dance sheet music published between 1880 and 1955. \nThe organization is the sole curator of the historic Herman Kenin Dance Band Library\, a 4000+ title collection once in the possession of the famous Portland dance band leader. \nThe Historic Music Preservation Project’s commitment to introducing this music to a new audience is achieved through the performance of The Ne Plus Ultra Jazz Orchestra\, an 11 piece ensemble which presents this music exactly as it was heard in its heyday. The organization also presents a quartet\, Ensemble Gitane\, performing music from the collection is the hot jazz style of Django Reinhardt. \nSammuel’s musical interests were cultivated as a child. At age 10 his parents purchased a flute for the budding musician\, and this would remain his primary instrument until age 25\, when Sammuel purchased his first banjo ukulele. With this controversial conversion from classical culture to an instrument better suited to the comic tunes of the 1920s\, it became obvious that a period of music hitherto unknown to the young man would shape his musical career as well as his personal life. Classically trained in voice in addition to flute\, Sammuel’s period sound has been influenced largely by Joey Nash\, Rudy Vallee\, and Russ Colombo. \nThe CCHM Speaker Series is sponsored by the Clark County Historic Preservation Commission and League of Women Voters of Clark County. General admission is $5; seniors and students are $4; children under 18 are $3; and the evening is free for CCHM members\, veterans\, and active-duty military personnel. \nAttendees are encouraged to arrive early\, as seating is limited. \nFor more information\, contact the museum at 360-993-5679 or outreach@cchmuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Hidden Histories: The South Vietnamese Side of the Vietnam War
DESCRIPTION:Hidden Histories: The South Vietnamese Side of the Vietnam War\nClark County Historical Museum and Humanities Washington\, as part of the 2023 CCHM Speaker Series\, are excited to have Julie Pham bring her impactful presentation “Hidden Histories: The South Vietnamese Side of the Vietnam War” to Southwest Washington. The event will occur on Thursday\, April 6\, 2023 in person at the Clark County Historical Museum (1511 Main Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98660). Doors open at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m. \nThe Vietnam War is seen by much of the Western world as being fought between the Americans and North Vietnamese Communists\, with the South Vietnamese largely absent. Yet many Vietnamese refugees who came to America after the war served in the South Vietnamese military\, and there is little recognition and understanding of their contributions and role in the war. In fact\, in American and Vietnamese Communist histories\, the South Vietnamese are painted as corrupt\, apathetic sidekicks to the Americans. How did the South Vietnamese military really experience the Vietnam War? Historian Julie Pham draws from interviews she conducted with 40 South Vietnamese military veterans in the United States\, and illuminates how people can remember historical events differently. \nJulie Pham (she/her) is the CEO of CuriosityBased\, a consulting practice focused on fostering curiosity in the workplace. Her family owns Northwest Vietnamese News. She published Their War: The Perspectives of the South Vietnamese Military in the Words of Veteran-Emigres in 2019. She earned her PhD in history from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. \nPham lives in Seattle. \nThe CCHM Speaker Series is sponsored by the Humanities Washington\, Clark County Historic Preservation Commission\, and the League of Women Voters of Clark County. Thanks to support from Humanities Washington this event is free to the public. \nAttendees are encouraged to arrive early\, as seating is limited. \nFor more information\, contact the museum at 360-993-5679 or outreach@cchmuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Military History Talk
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary Walker: Hero\, Surgeon\, Trailblazer \nThursday\, March 23rd\, 2023 \n6:30 pm \nGeneral O.O. Howard House \n750 Anderson St.\, Vancouver \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Trust is excited to host the Vancouver Barracks Military Association’s 2023 military history talk series. Join us for this fascinating discussion with speaker Michelle Marra\, a descendant of Dr. Walker. \nSince it was created in the Civil War\, the Congressional Medal of Honor has only been awarded to one woman\, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. Dr. Walker was a woman ahead of her times\, fighting for her nation as the first female surgeon in the Union Army. Her wartime service merited the United States’ highest award for bravery. Years later\, the Medal was rescinded by Congress\, but restored again\, in the late 20th century. \nDr. Walker went on to fight for women’s rights as a suffragette. As a leader in the rational dress movement of the late 1880s\, she became famous for wearing a top hat and suits with her Congressional Medal of Honor pinned to a lapel. Dr. Walker is an example of integrity\, character and leadership that still inspires people today. This program is presented by a descendant\, who will share both the personal and professional side of this amazing American. \nTo attend\, please email jddavis@rocketmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Mary Edwards Walker

SUMMARY:U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters 2023 National Tour- Clackamas Oregon
DESCRIPTION:U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters\n\n\n\nThe Navy Band Sea Chanters are the United States Navy’s official chorus. The ensemble performs a variety of music including traditional choral music\, sea chanteys\, patriotic fare\, opera\, Broadway and contemporary music. The Sea Chanters regularly perform for the public in the Washington\, D.C.\, area and throughout the United States while on national tours. At home in Washington\, they perform for the president\, vice president and numerous congressional\, military and foreign dignitaries. In 1956\, Lt. Harold Fultz\, then the band’s assistant leader\, organized a vocal group from the Navy School of Music to sing chanteys and patriotic songs for the State of the Nation dinner. Recognizing the ensemble’s immediate success\, Adm. Arleigh Burke\, then Chief of Naval Operations\, transferred the group to the Navy Band\, named them the Sea Chanters and tasked this all-male chorus with perpetuating the songs of the sea. In 1980\, the group added women to its ranks and expanded its repertoire to include everything from Brahms to Broadway. \nThe Sea Chanters are frequently found at the center of our most important national events\, including inauguration day performances and state funerals. They have played a vital role in comforting the nation in times of mourning\, including appearances at memorials for the astronauts of the space shuttle Columbia and the presidential wreath laying ceremony at the United Airlines flight 93 crash site in Shanksville\, Pennsylvania. \nYou can read more at https://www.navyband.navy.mil/ensembles/sea-chanters \nFree tickets available at https://usnavyband.ticketleap.com/us-navy-band-sea-chanters-clackamas/

SUMMARY:Clark County Historical Museum 2023 Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Defending Democracy: Founding of League of Women Voters in Clark County.\nClark County Historical Museum continues its 2023 Speaker Series on Thursday\, March 2\, with “Defending Democracy: Founding of League of Women Voters in Clark County.” The event will occur in person at the Clark County Historical Museum (1511 Main Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98660). Doors open at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m. \nOn the heels of the ratification of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote in 1920\, feisty Ruth Karr McKee gathered Vancouver’s key women activists to found the League of Women Voters of Clark County (LWVCC). Join LWVCC members\, Liz Backstrom and Tracy Reilly Kelly\, as they explore this astonishing advocate\, as well as what the early League did for progressive\, non-partisan action. Their discussion will cover 1920 up to the early World War II years. \nTracy Reilly Kelly retired as Program Manager of Community Education at Clark College. Initially a history major\, Tracy received her BA in Human Services from Evergreen State College and an MS in Teaching Health Education at Portland State University. In 2008\, Tracy was honored as a Woman of Achievement by the YWCA of Clark County and Clark College. She currently teaches at Clark part-time. \nElizabeth Backstrom is the Director of Grants and Contracts for YWCA Spokane\, working remotely and enjoying life in Vancouver. She majored in journalism at Western Washington University and earned an MPA at Eastern Washington University. She enjoys reading\, writing\, and history. As a night owl\, she gets through the day on coffee\, humor\, and sheer determination.
