DESCRIPTION:The Historic Trust and Humanities Washington partner to present a discussion with Steve Olson as he reveals the many influences of nuclear materials on Washington State\, and the many ways in which our state has been a pioneer in the Atomic Age. The program is offered at no charge; however\, due to limited seating\, registration is required. \nRegister HERE \nEvent Location: Red Cross Building\, 605 Barnes Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98660 \nAt the center of every nuclear weapon in the United States is a small pit of radioactive material manufactured at a top-secret facility in Eastern Washington\, a facility which\ntoday remains the most radiologically contaminated site in the Western hemisphere. \nBut Washington State’s role in the nuclear era ranges far beyond construction\, operation\, and ongoing cleanup of the Hanford nuclear reservation. Today\, Washington has two operating\nnuclear reactors\, one of which provides us with ten percent of our electricity. Radioactive substances are used in our state to cure diseases\, build airplanes\, detect pollutants\, and power smoke detectors. Further\, Naval Base Kitsap has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons deployed anywhere in the country. \nDrawing from history\, science\, and popular culture\, author Steve Olson reveals the many influences of nuclear materials in Washington State\, and the many ways in which our state has been a pioneer in the atomic age. \nSteve Olson (he/him) is a writer who most recently authored The Apocalypse Factory: Plutonium and the Making of the Atomic Age. His books have been nominated in several local and national book awards. Since 1979\, he has been a consultant writer for the National Academy of Sciences\, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology\, and other national scientific organizations. Raised in Eastern Washington\, Olson now lives in Seattle.

DESCRIPTION:Name-calling\, shouting matches\, cutting off relatives\, and even violence born of intense disagreements—there is bipartisan agreement that the current state of politics in the United States is troubling. How did we get here\, and what can we\, as a society and as individuals\, do about it? \nProfessor Steven Stehr investigates the roots and consequences of the dysfunction that characterizes the current state of politics in America. Stehr leads a conversation that asks\, how did our political spaces become war zones? To what extent is the lack of civility and policy gridlock driven by long-term trends in American society? Is contemporary America somehow different than the way it was in the past? Was there ever a “golden age” of bipartisanship and civility in the United States? \nUsing historical examples and contemporary cases\, Stehr shows audiences how the erosion of civil discourse harms democracy\, and what can be done to combat it. \nSeating is limited so you must reserve a seat.  Click HERE to reserve your seat. \nSteven Stehr (he/him) is the Sam Reed Distinguished Professor in Civic Education and Public Civility at Washington State University.
