DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Fort Vancouver and the National Park Service for a unique afternoon event of art and aviation! Lois Chichinoff Thadei is a bush pilot and aviation mechanic who learned from Clark County’s own Wally Olson at Evergreen Airport. To receive her pilot’s wheel rating and learn to dope and fabric old aircraft\, Thadei commuted between Ketchikan\, Alaska and Vancouver on a pontoon plane via Seattle. \nThadei\, born into a Tlingit and Haida community in Southeast Alaska\, is also an artist who comes from a family of Native Alaskan artists. Her work responds to a seasonal cycle as different materials become available. In the winter\, she fires pottery in her home\, creates stained and fused glass work\, and weaves Ravenstail baskets using cedar bark and grasses. She also creates jewelry from sterling silver\, glass\, copper\, jasper\, sapphire and ruby. In the summer\, she harvests and cures native grasses in the traditional method\, creates and fires raku\, and makes hand-built pottery. \nPlease join us for a memorable afternoon as Thadei shares reminiscences of learning to fly\, journeying across the Northwest\, and creating art that expresses and celebrates her heritage. \nWhat: Local artist and pilot Lois Chichinoff Thadei discusses her art and experiences as an aviator. \nWhen: March 18\, 2017\, 1 pm to 3 pm. DESCRIPTION:The Vancouver Barracks\, Proving Ground for Generals \nSpeaker: Jeff Davis \nThe Vancouver Barracks was established in 1849\, and was open as a military post until the new millennium. In the 150+ years of history\, many young officers served at the Vancouver Barracks\, and later rose to the rank of general. Jeff Davis will focus on many young officers who served from the 1849 to the early 1860s\, and became generals in the Civil War. \nJeff Davis joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 1979 at the Vancouver Barracks\, and served over 30 years of active and reserve military service. He has served in Italy\, Bosnia\, and Southwest Asia\, and two deployments with Operation Enduring Freedom as a military historian. Major Davis’ final assignment was as the Command Historian for the 104th Division\, where he was the defacto army historian of the Vancouver Barracks. Jeff Davis was also the principal author for the book “Weird Washington” and co-author of “Weird Oregon”. \nThe presentation will last about 60 minutes\, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Marshall House\, on Officer’s Row. This no admission fee. The Marshall House is located at 1301 Officer’s Row\, Vancouver\, WA 98661. To get there from Interstate 5\, take Exit 1C. Head east on Mill Plain Blvd to the first light\, then go south (right) on Fort Vancouver Way to the traffic circle. Take the third exit\, east on Evergreen Blvd to the second parking lot. The Marshall House is on the north side of Evergreen Blvd.
