DESCRIPTION:In honor of National Veterans and Military Families Month\, Clark County Historical Museum will conclude its 2019 First Thursday Speaker Series on Thursday\, Nov. 7\, with “What does Veterans Day mean to our veterans?” Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the event will begin at 7 p.m. \n\nThis presentation will feature local veterans\, including leaders and members with Vancouver’s Community Military Appreciation Committee (CMAC). Speakers will reflect on their military service\, life since retiring from military service\, and the meaning and personal significance of Veterans Day. Area veterans are encouraged to attend and share their own thoughts on Veterans Day during the audience discussion following the panel presentation. \nIn addition to Patrick Locke and Richard McHugh\, who each served tours in Vietnam\, the panel will also include CMAC board member Sean Gibson. \nGibson\, who grew up in Bethel\, Alaska\, enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves in 1988 as an infantryman\, then earned his commission in 1990. He served for six years as an infantry officer with deployments to the Middle East\, Okinawa\, and the Western Pacific\, and as a recruit training supervisor and operations officer. For the last 20 years of his career\, Gibson served as a public affairs officer in a variety of assignments in the United States with deployments to Kuwait and Iraq. He retired in 2016 from Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington\, D.C.\, then immediately put the Pentagon in his rearview mirror to drive west and settle with his wife and son in Vancouver. \nThe CCHM First Thursday Speaker Series is sponsored by the Clark County Historic Preservation Commission. General admission is $5; seniors and students are $4; children under 18 are $3; and the evening is free for veterans\, active-duty military personnel and their families\, and CCHM members. DESCRIPTION:POW/MIA Recognition Day is commemorated on the third Friday of every September\, a date that’s not associated with any particular war. In 1979\, Congress and the president passed resolutions making it official after the families of the more than 2\,500 Vietnam War POW/MIAs pushed for full accountability. \nDuring the first POW/MIA Recognition Day commemoration\, a ceremony was held at the National Cathedral in Washington\, D.C.\, while the 1st Tactical Squadron from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia flew the missing man formation. Most ceremonies since then have been held at the Pentagon\, and many smaller observances have cropped up across the nation and around the world on military installations. \nThe point of POW/MIA Recognition Day is to ensure that American remembers to stand behind those who serve and to make sure we do everything we can to account for those who have never returned.

It is a cooperative effort of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office\, Camas Police Department\, Vancouver Police Department\, and the senior citizens of Clark County. \nWhat is S.A.L.T.’s purpose?\n\nTo decrease crime and the “fear” of crime in order to raise livability for our seniors.\nTo increase and improve senior crime prevention and education.\nTo improve local law enforcement’s knowledge of the crime prevention needs of seniors.\nTo identify the concerns of local senior citizens.\nTo improve senior victim assistance.\nTo involve senior citizens in crime prevention and the educational efforts of S.A.L.T. and to raise awareness of the community of these special issues.\n\nWhat does S.A.L.T. do?\n\nMonthly meetings featuring speakers on relevant topics such as Elder Abuse Awareness\, Understanding Dementia\, Senior Health & Fitness\, Avoiding Scams\, etc.\n\nCurrently there is an East Side and a West Side for the public’s convenience in being able to reach the locations. However\, any citizen may attend one or more meetings per month. \nWest side S.A.L.T. meets:\nThird Monday of each month at 11 am at 40 & 8 Community Room in Hazel Dell at 7607 NE 26th Ave. Contact person is Kasey Frazier\, Clark County Sheriff’s Office\, 360.397.2211 ext. 3380. \nEast side S.A.L.T. meets:\nFourth Monday of each month at 11 am at Camas Police Department\, 2100 NE Third\, Camas\, WA.
