DESCRIPTION:In honor of National Veterans and Military Families Month\, Clark County Historical Museum will conclude its 2019 First Thursday Speaker Series on Thursday\, Nov. 7\, with “What does Veterans Day mean to our veterans?” Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the event will begin at 7 p.m. \n\nThis presentation will feature local veterans\, including leaders and members with Vancouver’s Community Military Appreciation Committee (CMAC). Speakers will reflect on their military service\, life since retiring from military service\, and the meaning and personal significance of Veterans Day. Area veterans are encouraged to attend and share their own thoughts on Veterans Day during the audience discussion following the panel presentation. \nIn addition to Patrick Locke and Richard McHugh\, who each served tours in Vietnam\, the panel will also include CMAC board member Sean Gibson. \nGibson\, who grew up in Bethel\, Alaska\, enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves in 1988 as an infantryman\, then earned his commission in 1990. He served for six years as an infantry officer with deployments to the Middle East\, Okinawa\, and the Western Pacific\, and as a recruit training supervisor and operations officer. For the last 20 years of his career\, Gibson served as a public affairs officer in a variety of assignments in the United States with deployments to Kuwait and Iraq. He retired in 2016 from Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington\, D.C.\, then immediately put the Pentagon in his rearview mirror to drive west and settle with his wife and son in Vancouver. \nThe CCHM First Thursday Speaker Series is sponsored by the Clark County Historic Preservation Commission. General admission is $5; seniors and students are $4; children under 18 are $3; and the evening is free for veterans\, active-duty military personnel and their families\, and CCHM members. DESCRIPTION:POW/MIA Recognition Day is commemorated on the third Friday of every September\, a date that’s not associated with any particular war. In 1979\, Congress and the president passed resolutions making it official after the families of the more than 2\,500 Vietnam War POW/MIAs pushed for full accountability. \nDuring the first POW/MIA Recognition Day commemoration\, a ceremony was held at the National Cathedral in Washington\, D.C.\, while the 1st Tactical Squadron from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia flew the missing man formation. Most ceremonies since then have been held at the Pentagon\, and many smaller observances have cropped up across the nation and around the world on military installations. \nThe point of POW/MIA Recognition Day is to ensure that American remembers to stand behind those who serve and to make sure we do everything we can to account for those who have never returned.

DESCRIPTION:Observe Patriot Day\nOn the direction of the President\, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans\, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. The flag should be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11\, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities\, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks\, hold special church services or prayer meetings. People who personally experienced the events in 2001 or lost loved ones in them\, may lay flowers or visit memorials. \nPublic Life\nPatriot Day is not a federal holiday and schools and businesses do not close. Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. Some people and organizations may take some time out to hold prayers for the victims of the attacks\, but these do not usually affect public life for more than a few minutes. \nAbout Patriot Day\nOn September 11\, 2001\, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers then deliberately flew three of the planes into two important buildings\, the Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth crashed into a field near Shanksville\, Pennsylvania. The loss of life and damage that these hijackings caused form the biggest act of terrorism ever on United States soil. Nearly 3000 people died in the attacks and the economic impact was immense. \nThe attacks have greatly increased attention to national security in the United States. This has had huge implications for United States national and international politics. This is particularly true for the relationships between the United States and Islamic countries in the Middle East. \nSymbols\nThe most potent symbol of the events that happened on September 11\, 2001 are pictures and videos of planes flying into buildings\, of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center engulfed in smoke and later collapsing and of people falling from buildings. Pictures taken of damaged buildings and relatives looking for loved ones in the days and weeks after the attacks are also often shown. The flag of the United States is often displayed around images of the events on September 11\, 2001. This is to remind Americans that their country remained strong in the face of massive terrorist attacks. \nPatriot Day should not be confused with Patriot’s Day\, also known as Patriots Day\, which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775\, which were two of the earliest battles in the American Revolutionary War.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Nez Perce Tribe in their annual memorial to remember Chief Redheart’s band\, who were imprisioned for eight months without cause at Fort Vancouver in 1877-78. \nThe ceremony includes singing in honor of the ancestors\, the Riderless Horse (Empty Saddle) Ceremony\, the Sacred Pipe Ceremony\, and recognition of Veterans. Each year Nez Perce tribal members travel to sites important in their history to conduct traditional memorials to honor their ancestors. \nAfter the ceremony\, the public is encouraged to attend a traditional Native American meal\, prepared and served by Bow and Arrow Culture Club located in the Artillery Barracks at 600 E. Hatheway Road\, Vancouver. \nThere is no admission charge. Donations are welcome. DESCRIPTION:The Civilian Conservation Corps in the Vancouver Barracks District.\nWhen most people think about the Civilian Conservation Corps\, or CCC\, they imagine thousands of young men carrying shovels\, axes\, and saws throughout the woodlands of the United States. While much of the CCC’s work took place in the woods\, organizing\, training\, and supplying the woodland camps was done from locations with access to paved roads\, railroads\, and rivers. Places like the Vancouver Barracks\, where soldiers played the part of mentors and trainers for the new CCC recruits. SUMMARY:BUFFALO SOLDIERS AT THE VANCOUVER BARRACKS
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1890s\, and in World War II\, African American soldiers\, sometimes called Buffalo Soldiers served at the Vancouver Barracks. \nMr. Wilson Keller\, who is working on his Boy Scout Eagle project will talk about an interpretive sign about the Buffalo Soldiers\, he is helping design and have installed at the Vancouver Barracks. \nRetired U.S. Army Non-Commission Officer Frazier Raymond\, will speak about Cathay Williams\, the only female Buffalo Soldiers.  Cathay Williams joined the U.S. Army in 1866\, posing as a man\, named William Cathay.  She and her unit were eventually assigned to New Mexico\, where her health declined.  Doctors discovered she was a woman\, and discharged her in 1868.  Her story appeared in newspapers in the 1870s\, and in 1891\, Cathay Williams applied for a disability pension based upon her military service.  Unfortunately\, it was denied\, and she died shortly afterward.

DESCRIPTION:Buffalo Soldiers at the Vancouver Barracks \nIn the late 1890s\, and in World War II\, African American soldiers\, sometimes called Buffalo Soldiers served at the Vancouver Barracks.\nMr. Wilson Keller\, who is working on his Boy Scout Eagle project will talk about an interpretive sign about the Buffalo Soldiers\, he is helping design and have installed at the Vancouver Barracks.\nRetired U.S. Army Non-Commission Officer Frazier Raymond\, will speak about Cathay Williams\, the only female Buffalo Soldiers. Cathay Williams joined the U.S. Army in 1866\, posing as a man\, named William Cathay. She and her unit were eventually assigned to New Mexico\, where her health declined. Doctors discovered she was a woman\, and discharged her in 1868. Her story appeared in newspapers in the 1870s\, and in 1891\, Cathay Williams applied for a disability pension based upon her military service. Unfortunately\, it was denied\, and she died shortly afterward.

Kids and their families are invited to this free event for fun activities\, historic Smokey video clips\, learn about wildfire prevention and\, of course\, wish Smokey Bear a happy birthday in person. \nSmokey’s birthday will be held at the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center at 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd.\, where the Gifford Pinchot National Forest shares an information desk with Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Smokey Bear-themed items and national forest recreation maps will also be for sale in the Friends of Fort Vancouver bookstore. \nThe real Smokey Bear was a little cub saved by firefighters during a wildfire in New Mexico. His paws were badly burned when he clung to a smoking\, burned out tree. News of the little bear’s rescue spread quickly across the nation and soon became a national icon for promoting fire safety and wildfire prevention. He received so many gifts of honey and an outpouring of mail that he was assigned his own private zip code! \nWhile at the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center be sure to check out a special exhibit\, Gifford Pinchot National Forest Adventures. The visitor center also offers exhibits about Fort Vancouver’s long history\, orientation films\, contemporary local Native American art\, books\, maps\, and gifts. In January 1946 it was dropped from the U.S. Army Air Forces inventory and sold to civilian buyers ending up with Mark Hurd Aerial Surveys of Santa Barbara\, California. Bruce Pruett of Livermore\, California bought it from Hurd in 1968\, essentially for scrap value. In 1990 Jack Erickson acquired it for the museum and in 1995 restoration was started\, the first flight being made in early 1997.\nThe Erickson Aircraft Collection (formerly located at the historic Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook\, Oregon) based in Madras\, Oregon displays a vintage WWII aircraft collection started by Jack Erickson in 1983. Pack a snack and a blanket\, come to the Fort\, and stake out your spot to watch the biggest fireworks show in the region. \nThis year is all about a bigger\, brighter\, BOOM! With the City-wide ban on retail fireworks\, Vancouver’s Fireworks Spectacular will allow the community to enjoy the tradition of Independence Day fireworks safely. \nINTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING AT VANCOUVER’S FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR?\nLearn more and submit an application here \nFAQS\nNote that there are some changes this year\, most notably the show will be the biggest and brightest fireworks display in years! \n\nYes\, there will be a fireworks show Wednesday\, July 4\, 2018\, at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.\nThe fireworks launch at 10:05pm to a synchronized soundtrack.\nThis year’s show will be the largest fireworks display Vancouver has had in decades.\nFree entry. Donations will be accepted from those who want to support next year’s Fireworks Spectacular\, with a portion of proceeds going to support the Lower Columbia Veterans Coalition.\nGates open at 8am\, but suggested arrival time is after 6pm. Security checks will be at all entrance gates. The Historic Trust’s Marshall House and Providence Academy\, and the National Park Service’s Fort Vancouver\, Pearson Air Museum\, and Visitor Center will be open that day.\nYou can bring in food and drinks (no alcohol) as well as blankets and camping chairs to comfortably enjoy the firework show.\nThere is no beer garden at the event this year.\nThere are no food vendors at the event this year.\nThere is no live entertainment at the event this year. Alpha Media will play a variety of recorded music from their radio stations during the event.\nNo alcohol\, drugs\, personal fireworks\, weapons\, BBQs\, open flames\, hammocks\, or pets allowed.\nSmall canopies and tents are allowed. Do not drive stakes into the ground. All canopies and tents must be taken down by sundown to not block others’ view of the fireworks.\nThe fireworks will not be visible from Clark College\, the Columbia River\, or from Portland.\nSeveral area roads will be closed beginning 10am. See road closures.\nParking:\n\nADA parking is free onsite along 5th Street for those with a valid ADA permit.\nDowntown Vancouver parking is free for the holiday.\nC-Tran has two free shuttles starting at 6pm\, one from Fisher’s Landing Transit Center on SE 164th the other at the 99th Street Transit Center\, with return service after the firework show.\n$10 Public Parking available at Providence Academy and the grass lot on 5th St between S Street and U Street.\n\n\n\nThe Historic Trust is dedicated to preserving the past and inspiring the future. Raised on an orchard in Hood River\, Oregon\, Linda is also the granddaughter of Japanese immigrants.  In addition to Nisei Soldiers Break their Silence\, Linda is the author of Hood River Issei.\nShe is very involved in projects\, exhibits\, and organizations educating and celebrating the history of Japanese Americans in Oregon. As a former elementary school teacher and a university professor\, Dr. Linda Tamura is a teacher of teachers and an educational leader.\n\nAugust 3rd\, 2018 Milwaukie\, Veterans Club will gather to OPEN the B-17 Alliance Fly-In at the historic Salem McNary Airfield. She began working at the gas station as a toddler. She was managing the station in her parents absence by age 16. She still owns and operates the Bomber Complex Restaurant & Catering Business and is an active board member for B-17 Alliance Foundation.
