SUMMARY:CMAC's Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Fort Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:The Community Military Appreciation Committee (CMAC) will present Vancouver’s Memorial Day Observance Monday\, May 29\, 2023\, at 11 am. This annual ceremony at the Bandstand on the Vancouver Barracks Parade Ground honors men and women who have lost their lives in service of our country. Visitors may view the garrison flag raising\, Washington Army National Guard Howitzer cannon firing\, and a wreath laying ceremony in honor of fallen heroes. Vancouver’s Memorial Day Observance is free of charge.  \nCMAC organizes this annual event with the support from those around the community like: The City of Vancouver\, National Park Service (NPS)\, Clark County\, Waste Connections\, Boy Scouts of America\, Young Marines\, Chapter 7824 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and 40 et 8. For over 170 years\, the Vancouver Barracks has been a center for military community. The Vancouver Barracks is now preserved by the National Park Service at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. \nFort Vancouver National Historic Site Superintendent Tracy Fortmann said\, “Vancouver Barracks is an incredibly special place and a crucial part of this national park. The Barracks are much more than a visible reminder of our shared 19th and 20th century military history\, the Barracks serve us as a direct touchstone to our nation’s military past and the soldiers who have served and sacrificed for our country. Superintendent Fortmann added\, “It is a tremendous honor to care for Fort Vancouver National Historic Site\, and our responsibility goes far beyond caring for the buildings and landscapes through our stewardship\, the history and stories of those who were here remain alive in perpetuity.” \nRetired Army Colonel Larry J. Smith will be the Master of Ceremonies. Speakers at the event will include Superintendent Fortmann\, Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle\, with a keynote by Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. There will be special remarks by Meredith McMackin\, a Gold Star mother. Boy Scouts of America Troops 479 and 5479 are raising and lowering the garrison flag\, an important symbol of our community’s military history. There will be a dove release and color guards\, as well as military medleys played by the 204th Army Band. \nLarry Smith stated\, “The Memorial Day Observance honors those who have given their lives for our country\, and the event also provides us with an opportunity to show our respect and support for the men and women of our armed forces.” \nParking is available starting at 09:00 am at Hudson’s Bay High School\, where attendees may ride a C-Tran shuttle to and from the event site. \nCMAC is an all-inclusive group composed of members representing youth\, education\, civic\, military\, veteran groups\, and local governments. CMAC executes and plans community-wide events\, such as Memorial Day\, Veterans Day\, Our Community Salutes\, and POW/MIA Day ceremonies\, as well as recognition and support of military families of all services. SUMMARY:Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11\, for honoring military veterans\, that is\, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces (and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable).[1][2] It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918\, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations\, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. \nVeterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day\, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans\, while Memorial Day honors those who had died while in military service.[3] Another military holiday that also occurs in May\, Armed Forces Day\, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military. Additionally\, Women Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of U.S. states that specifically honors women who have served in the U.S. military.

SUMMARY:Marine Corps 245th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Every year around the Marine Corps’ Nov. 10 birthday\, Marines around the world gather to celebrate the history and honor of the Corps while recognizing the young Marines who make up its future. \nParties rage from Las Vegas to San Diego to Okinawa\, Japan\, while more subdued celebrations are held by forward-deployed Marines in the Middle East. Everywhere\, a birthday cake is cut and the birthday message from the 13th Marine Corps Commandant Gen. John A. Lejeune is read. \n\nBut in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic the celebrations may face new restrictions\, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Troy Black warned Friday in a message posted on Facebook. \n“Marines\, Sailors\, and family members\, although several months away\, it is probable that many COVID-19 restrictions will still be in place come November 10\, 2020 limiting the size and scope of unit Birthday Ball Ceremonies\,” Black wrote in the message\, first reported by Task & Purpose.

SUMMARY:The Lough Legacy Veterans Parade - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:The 34th Annual Lough Legacy Veterans Parade\, which was begun in 1986 by a group of volunteers who recognized a need in the Clark County community to honor veterans\, is cancelled due to the current Coronavirus pandemic. \nRead more here\n________________________________________________________________________________________\nThe Lough Legacy Veterans Parade celebrates the service and sacrifice area veterans have made for our freedom in partnership with the City of Vancouver.   These events are made possible through a generous donation from Frank and JoAnne Lough who dedicated resources in support of Veterans Day Services. \nYear after year\, dedicated volunteers and local organizations and businesses have helped to ensure that our community can continue to recognize and honor our veterans at the annual Veterans Parade. \nThe parade averages over 110 parade entries\, nearly 3\,000 people marching! SUMMARY:POW/MIA Recognition Day
DESCRIPTION:POW/MIA Recognition Day is commemorated on the third Friday of every September\, a date that’s not associated with any particular war. In 1979\, Congress and the president passed resolutions making it official after the families of the more than 2\,500 Vietnam War POW/MIAs pushed for full accountability. \nDuring the first POW/MIA Recognition Day commemoration\, a ceremony was held at the National Cathedral in Washington\, D.C.\, while the 1st Tactical Squadron from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia flew the missing man formation. Most ceremonies since then have been held at the Pentagon\, and many smaller observances have cropped up across the nation and around the world on military installations. \nThe point of POW/MIA Recognition Day is to ensure that American remembers to stand behind those who serve and to make sure we do everything we can to account for those who have never returned.

SUMMARY:Patriot Day Video Salute
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Trust and its partners present a Patriot Day Salute video to remember those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks. \nThe video will also be aired at 10am on channel 23 and 1pm on channel 21 on 9/11. Other days/times can be found here https://www.cvtv.org/schedule. \nNineteen years ago\, terrorists hijacked airplanes on September 11 to attack the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington\, D.C. Everyone on board the three planes and nearly 3\,000 people on the ground were killed. A fourth hijacked plane on way to an unknown destination crashed into a field near Shanksville\, Pennsylvania\, killing everyone aboard. We honor those who paid the ultimate price and acknowledge the people who suffer from the aftereffects of the events that unfolded that day. \nThank you to Presenting Sponsor Davidson & Associates Insurance. The Historic Trust is also grateful to its partners the Community Military Appreciation Committee and the City of Vancouver\, along with media sponsor The Columbian\, for making possible this virtual salute. The Trust and partners are grateful to the speakers\, musicians\, and other participants who generously cooperated in making the video. \n_____________________________________\nObserve Patriot Day\nOn the direction of the President\, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans\, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. The flag should be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11\, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities\, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks\, hold special church services or prayer meetings. People who personally experienced the events in 2001 or lost loved ones in them\, may lay flowers or visit memorials. \nPublic Life\nPatriot Day is not a federal holiday and schools and businesses do not close. Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. Some people and organizations may take some time out to hold prayers for the victims of the attacks\, but these do not usually affect public life for more than a few minutes. \nAbout Patriot Day\nOn September 11\, 2001\, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers then deliberately flew three of the planes into two important buildings\, the Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth crashed into a field near Shanksville\, Pennsylvania. The loss of life and damage that these hijackings caused form the biggest act of terrorism ever on United States soil. Nearly 3000 people died in the attacks and the economic impact was immense. \nThe attacks have greatly increased attention to national security in the United States. This has had huge implications for United States national and international politics. This is particularly true for the relationships between the United States and Islamic countries in the Middle East. \nSymbols\nThe most potent symbol of the events that happened on September 11\, 2001 are pictures and videos of planes flying into buildings\, of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center engulfed in smoke and later collapsing and of people falling from buildings. Pictures taken of damaged buildings and relatives looking for loved ones in the days and weeks after the attacks are also often shown. The flag of the United States is often displayed around images of the events on September 11\, 2001. This is to remind Americans that their country remained strong in the face of massive terrorist attacks. \nPatriot Day should not be confused with Patriot’s Day\, also known as Patriots Day\, which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775\, which were two of the earliest battles in the American Revolutionary War.
